‘New Moon’ Loses Box Office Record to ‘Harry Potter’

Yesterday when The Twilight Saga:Eclipse lost it’s midnight screenings record to Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2, it looked like The Twilight Saga: New Moon was going to lose it’s record as well. Today, the numbers are in, and New Moon’s one day box office record of $72.7 million was totally obliterated by Harry Potter’s $92.1 million. It looks like The Dark Knight better be ready to lose to Harry Potter as well!Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is making box office magic, earning a massive $92.1 million on Friday to easily score the biggest single day gross of all time domestically.

Overseas, the pic earned another $75 million on Friday for a three-day international total of $157.5 million, bringing its worldwide cume to a record-breaking $249.6 million.

By all accounts, Deathly Hallows 2 is on track to score the biggest worldwide opening of all time, beating the $394 million earned by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in its debut. Domestically, it’s expected to eclipse the record-breaking $158.4 million grossed by Warners’ The Dark Knight in its opening weekend.
Domestically, the previous single-day best belonged to The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which earned $72.7 million on its first day.

The final Harry Potter pic also fueled the biggest Friday ever at the domestic box office at $117 million, smashing the $107 million record set on Nov. 20, 2009 when New Moon opened.

Friday’s $92.1 million domestic tally for Deathly Hallows 2 — which received an A CinemaScore–included a record-breaking $43.5 million in midnight grosses.
