‘New Moon’ Loses Box Office Record to ‘Harry Potter’

Yesterday when The Twilight Saga:Eclipse lost it’s midnight screenings record to Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2, it looked like The Twilight Saga: New Moon was going to lose it’s record as well. Today, the numbers are in, and New Moon’s one day box office record of $72.7 million was totally obliterated by Harry Potter’s $92.1 million. It looks like The Dark Knight better be ready to lose to Harry Potter as well!

Summit Executives, Melissa Rosenberg, and Chris Weitz Give Credit To Harry Potter Films

Erik Feig(a Summit Executive), Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight Saga screenwriter) and Chris Weitz (the director of The Golden Compass, New Moon and A Better Life) have cited the Harry Potter films as industry inspirations and changers. In the above photo, taken at the A Better Life premiere, Erik Feig is standing to Chris Weitz’s immediate left:

Erik Feig:

‘”There was a sea change with Harry Potter,” says Erik Feig, president of worldwide production at Summit Entertainment, which has made the Twilight movies. “The story has a younger protagonist, but the book series and the movies are greatly enjoyed by older people, too. I devoured the first book and gave it to every grown-up I knew. We saw the same thing with Twilight. We did not ghetto-ize it as a young-adult movie. Nor did they with Harry Potter. They drew all audiences. It was an inspiration to us.”

Henry Cavill is new Superman, almost starred in Twilight

British hunk Henry Cavill has been cast as the new Superman, Warner Brothers announced Jan. 30, 2011.

Cavill, 27, became famous for playing Charles Brandon on the hit Showtime series The Tudors from 2007 to 2010.

Hits the Gym Daily For Shirtless Scenes

The athletic 6'1" Henry, a former rugby player who retired due to injury, loves sports and has to work out regularly because he gains weight easily.

“I’m from a family of six men, so I’m bound to be physical,” Cavill has said.

"I don't go to the gym every day, but I'll tend to blast it for a couple of weeks before a shirtless scene."

Lost Twilight Role to Robert Pattinson

When it comes to film roles, Henry's biggest competition has been other British actors.

Cavill lost the role of Batman to Christian Bale and Spiderman to Andrew Garfield. He was also edged out for the role of Edward Cullen in Twilight by Robert Pattinson.

Interestingly, Henry was Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's top choice to play Edward, but film execs thought he looked too old to play a 17-year-old high school student.

The new Superman film, which will be directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan (director of Inception and the Batman films), comes out in December 2012.

Other roles Henry is believed to have been passed over for include the lead in Batman Begins (which went to Christian Bale), Cedric in 2005 Harry Potter movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (which went to Robert Pattinson) and James Bond in Casino Royale (which went to Daniel Craig).
