Fan Site Friday: Interview with Bill Condon

Last week at Comic Con the fan sites had the opportunity to interview Bill Condon after the Breaking Dawn panel. Below is the transcript of the interview. Please be aware there is discussion of the clips seen at Comic Con so if you don’t want to be spoiled on anything read with caution! (You can find the clips here)

Q: About the honeymoon scene, I noticed of course the humor in that. Why did you guys choose to do it that way and how did that decision come about?

Bill: About being funny when she’s getting ready? It just felt like it was human. It was like, again, making everything as real as possible, and it’s like anybody in that moment when it’s like “Oh my God, it’s about to happen”, it’s one thing it’s gonna happen this night. God, it’s Bella, after all this time. And it’s a vampire, you know? But now is the moment and is just about making it as relatable as possible. Like, what do you do? You just try to control it in any way you possibly can. You know, you brush your teeth for the tenth time and do all those things to make yourself think that you’re ready, which of course you can’t do. And then the way we cut it it was just like a lot of jump cuts to make it like she’s sort of this nervous jangly thing. You know the way Kristen goes? (taps fingers impatiently on table, everyone laughs) that was the rhythm of it, you know? We matched that with the way we presented it.

Q: Have you had experience working with a lot of child actors, and what was it like working with all the Reneesmes?
Bill: Oh, yeah (laughs). That’s for Part 2! I had done a little before, but not as much as now. First, Mackenzie, she’s a 10 year old going on 30. She’s so mature and smart, so that was a pleasure. Sometimes it was hard because the other actresses were actually just there. It was always going to be just Mackenzie’s expressions and things like that, so it was a very specific technical thing that even I was learning as we did it. But I have to say, they were real troopers these girls.

Edward 'Becomes A Man' In 'Breaking Dawn'

MTV had an interview with Bill Condon . He is the right guy for BD no doubt. None of the directors were as suitable as him. Check it out. His words have expressed what we were rightfully wishing for Twilight.
Spoilers alert!!

He also opened up about how stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have tackled the acting challenges presented to their characters, Bella and Edward. Chris Weitz: 'I was the Ringo Starr of Twilight: New Moon'

New Moon director Chris Weitz has revealed that he felt like the Ringo Starr of the Twilight franchise.

The A Better Life filmmaker, who helmed the second movie in the vampire romance franchise, suggested that the fan hysteria created by stars Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart was akin to Beatlemania.
<--more-->!
Weitz told Digital Spy that the amount of screaming from Twilight fans will "haunt him forever".

"I remember going to the Munich Olympic Stadium and there were 23,000 young women screaming. It wasn't for me, I was only the Ringo Starr at best of the whole quadruplet that was travelling," he said.

The director also recalled being unable to go to the bathroom during filming in a small Italian town because the location was overrun with fans of Stephenie Meyer's fantasy saga.

"When we were shooting our final four days in Montepulciano in Italy, because it was known that we were shooting there every day, thousands and thousands more young girls would show up - until the point where the streets were jammed, we couldn't get our equipment from one location to another," he explained.

"I couldn't go to the loo because every cafe, every restaurant was just packed. So I just held it!"

‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ to Channel ‘Lord of the Rings’?

Thanks to our friends at pattinsonstew here's the latest bit of info on SWATH with a spoiler
'Snow White & The Huntsman' will have 8 dwarfs instead of 7 (spoiler at the bottom)

Two Snow White films are currently racing to the big screen, and the latter film to be released, “Snow White and the Huntsman” showed off its cast and producers during a Hall H presentation at Comic-Con Saturday afternoon. Even though production has yet to start, stars Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin were on hand to talk about their characters and show off initial costume fittings.

The biggest difference between “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which will be released by Universal Pictures next June 1, and the competing Snow White film from Relativity Media, which comes out March 16, is that their “rough tough” film is more on the scale of “Lord of the Rings,” whereas the other seems “softer,” said producer Joe Roth. He added that while he was an executive at Disney, they released “Armageddon” seven weeks after “Deep Impact,” and both made money. Not only that, he said that according to research, people were more likely to see “Armageddon” if they’d seen “Deep Impact” first. The two Snow White films will be released 10 weeks apart.<--more-->!

Given the lack of footage, for obvious reasons, director Rupert Sanders instead showed a sizzle reel of his past commercial work, such as ads for “Call of Duty: Black Ops” and “Halo 3,” and an “audition” short film he made to show executives what his vision and tone were for the film. He told he crowd to ignore any pilfered material and music they recognized, as the short film was not made to be shown publicly.

Sanders also said he had wanted to make a war film, so it was “weird” that he got the Snow White gig, but it oddly fits because his take on the film will feature giant battle scenes and very large landscapes full of emotion. “With commercials, you’re in a straight-jacket because you can’t really tell a story, really,” he said. Thus this was perfect film for him to lose his “cinematic virginity.”

Certainly, Stewart and Theron seemed ready for the adventure. Stewart said part of the reason she was attracted to the role was because she got to have a sword. Theron then jokingly said to her new co-star, “I’m ready for it, b—-. Let’s go.”

One plot point the panel presenters did disclose was that instead of seven dwarfs, “Snow White and the Huntsman” would have eight and be portrayed by the likes of Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins and Ian McShane. (“They’re my tough, East End British SAS squad,” joked Sanders.) He then added that the reason there were eight was because there’s a few great lines when (spoiler alert!) one of them gets killed. “It’s a copyright issue,” he said.

Bill Condon Interview at Movies.com

Movies.com: Today is your first time at Comic Con , and your first exposure to the Twilight fandom at large. What was going through your head on that dais?

Bill Condon: I was praying that nobody booed at the clip, that they would be accepting of it, because that’s like crazy. I’ve been in the editing room, and it’s so cocooned. We haven’t had any test screening. So to show scenes, six to seven minutes of the movie, my heart was beating definitely. But it felt good. I thought it went well.

Movies.com: Some people might say that Breaking Dawn is a departure from your usual work. Do you see it as a big departure from what you’ve done previously?

Condon: No. It’s just that I started out making horror movies, and I like different genres. I’m not saying this is a horror movie specifically. I don’t know why I do key into these characters, and especially Bella, in my own way. I don’t know if I can describe it any better than that. It doesn’t seem so different to me.

Movies.com: You mentioned your history in the horror genre, I think a lot of fans my not associate you with horror so much as Dream Girls or Kinsey. Which of the horror films that you have worked on is your favorite?

Condon: The first thing I wrote, Strange Behavior, it’s got a very off-beat tone. It’s like a mad scientist movie from the 1950’s, but it’s the 1980’s. I have a real fondness for that movie. Everything is done with a skewed approach and a wink to it. Which I think, when I made God’s and Monsters, so much of that movie is a riff on The Bride of Frankenstein. Strange Behavior was in its own way too. So I don’t know it all comes back to that same movie.

Movies.com: Maybe you have a calling to The Bride of Frankenstein. You can do the next revamped Mel Brooks version.

Condon: [Laughs] Exactly, exactly.

Bill Condon reveals how 'Twilight' fans changed the course of 'Breaking Dawn'

One of Bill Condon's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 interviews from yesterday was with Thompson on Hollywood from IndieWireBlog, and in the interview, Condon revealed how Twilight fans changed at least one major thing in Breaking Dawn - Part 1.

Remember back on the first day of shooting, how Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart walked through the streets of Lapa, Brazil in their honeymoon outfits? If you do, then you'll remember how many extras were brought on-board for the scene and also how many video captures were done by fans in their neighboring apartments, etc. Well, it's a good thing that happened, after all, because the footage from that shot led Twilight fans to speak up about the fact that the two weren't wearing their wedding rings (since the scene, after all, was intended to be a piece of the Honeymoon). That outcry changed the course of Breaking Dawn's treatment of the matter, according to Bill Condon.

The full video interview is attached in the sidebar, but here's the relevant sample.

When asked whether Twilight fans ever gave him any advice he heeded, he said:

Five Awesome Things We Heard From the Twilight Stars at Comic-Con

We got pretty darn close to the Twilight star today at Comic-Con—yes, he really does glisten—as well as to some of his nearest and dearest castmates. When they weren't discussing the intensity of Bella giving birth or Taylor Lautner's CGI-wolf envy, they were busy tickling our funny bones.

Here are the five best things that we heard today during that magical hour spent with the vampires and werewolves of Breaking Dawn:

MORE: Do Twilight Stars Have "Secret Knowledge" of Life After Breaking Dawn?
Eonline lists Five awesome things of Twilight heard at comic con.

1. Potter Shots: Asked whether he had more fun playing Cedric Diggory (a more upbeat character than Edward, sure, but he dies, human-style), Rob was literally at a loss for words...until they just started flowing out!

"Well, no," he began. "They were both really, really fun. I definitely didn't know what I was doing when I was playing Cedric because it was so early on. I didn't even know if I wanted to be an actor at the time! It was fun, in that respect, because I was genuinely just playing around. Twilight has really changed my life and it's allowed me to live in this world, which...it's very difficult in. It's almost impossible to find another way of living in it. I don't know what I'm talking about, obviously!"

Obviously.

Interview of the cast of The Twilight Saga : Breaking Dawn at Comic-Con 2011

Pattinson and Kristen Stewart get cosy at Comic-Con

And at the press conference at the comic book, film and TV convention in San Diego, California, Kristen and Rob gave a little insight into their relationship.

The cast were asked by a reporter about each of their 'nerdy' traits. Robert replied that Kristen 'only watches the cooking channel.

'Breaking Dawn' Honeymoon Debuts At Comic-Con

Here's the information on the two new clips that debuted at comic con across various sites.

MTV — It was the swoon heard 'round the San Diego Convention center, as the honeymoon scene from "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" debuted at Comic-Con.

Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner premiered two brand-new scenes from the highly anticipated movie on Thursday (July 21) in Hall H, where more than 6,000 fans had flocked to see their favorite stars. The honeymoon scene, which Twilighters got a glimpse of in a teaser trailer that aired during this year's MTV Movie Awards, was definitely the hit of the panel.

The scene starts with Edward Cullen carrying the newly minted Bella Cullen over the threshold at their honeymoon location, the fictional Isle Esme. One of the most distinct elements of the scene was how adult both Stewart and Pattinson look, marking their transition to married couple. After exchanging a lingering steamy look in their beautiful tropical bedroom, Bella asks Edward for "a few human minutes."

"Don't take too long, Mrs. Cullen," Edward replies, causing an echo of sighs around Hall H.

What follows is a cute sequence with Bella taking some personal time in the bathroom to brush her teeth, shave her legs, pick out a sexy outfit (her new sister-in-law Alice packed only lingerie for her) and shake off her nerves before getting ready to consummate her marriage.

After telling herself, "Don't be a coward," Bella walks outside to the beach in only a towel and sees Edward standing naked in the ocean. She lets her towel fall to the sand, and then walks out to meet her husband in the ocean — right as the clip ends.

Filming the scene, though, was not as romantic as it looks on the big screen, according to the "Breaking Dawn" stars. "Brazil was amazing," Pattinson said of the shooting location. "It was really amazing the day we got there, and really beautiful and warm and everything you'd expect. Then it suddenly, for the remainder of the shoot, was not only raining but like hurricane storms. ... It was kind of like having a honeymoon in England. We were playing board games instead of, like, making love on the beach."

Taylor Lautner's character, Jacob Black, was the focus of the second scene that debuted at Comic-Con. Among the castmembers who also make appearances in it are Peter Facinelli and Elizabeth Reaser, who play Cullen patriarch and matriarch Carlisle and Esme, as well as members of the wolf pack, including Julia Jones, Booboo Stewart, Alex Meraz, Bronson Pelletier, Tyson Houseman and Kiowa Gordon.

The first half of the second scene shows Jacob meeting with Carlisle and Esme. He warns them about facing off against wolf pack leader Sam Uley, but Carlisle and Esme tell Jacob they will risk their lives to protect Bella. Then Jacob and his followers, Leah and Seth Clearwater, head to a meeting with the now-enemy werewolves Paul, Quil, Jared and Embry. Jacob asks them to tell Sam that when Bella's baby is born, he will be the "the one to destroy it."

"I'm the only one who can," he explains. "They trust me."

Lautner comes to the forefront in "Part 1," but he said he was jealous that his special-effects wolf form got to do many more action scenes than he did. "I wish I could be actually doing that. I'm super jealous of my CGI wolf, though he is pretty cute and fluffy," Lautner admitted to the San Diego crowd.

But that doesn't mean he didn't endure some scrapes. Lautner said he actually got a bit bruised by Pattinson during one of the movie's key moments: the birthing scene. "He gives me a nice punch in this [scene] after he finds out I imprinted on his daughter," Lautner said with a laugh.

Comic Con updates: Tent City, MTV’s Breaking Dawn special, and more!

*MTV will be live-streaming from SDCC, and will also feature an hour-long Breaking Dawn special with lots of cast and crew.

NextMovie asks a few burning questions related to Comic Con.

2. Can Kristin Stewart carry “Snow White and the Huntsman”?
Considering there are three different modernizations of “Snow White” being worked on in Hollywood right now, “Snow White and the Huntsman” has a lot of competition out there. Luckily, this “Snow White” has two big advantages: “Twilight” superstar Kristen Stewart as Snow and “Thor’s” Chris Hemsworth as The Hunstman who decides to spare her life. Will they be enough to help this fable stand out from the crowd? We should find out when the first footage screens at Comic-Con.

5. Will Taylor Lautner destroy Comic-Con?
It’s hard to believe that once upon a time, Taylor Lautner was in very real danger of being dumped from the “Twilight” franchise because he wasn’t considered big enough to play the werewolf Jacob. Well, is he big enough now, America? Considering he’s become one of the hottest stars in Hollywood, Lautner’s presence may be more than even Comic-Con can handle, which is saying something from a venue that has hosted Darth Vader. But can thousands of Twihard tweens successfully mix with furries and cosplay rangers? The world will soon find out.

6. How big will the “Twilight” buzz be?
Speaking of “Twilight,” Comic-Con 2008 was dominated by the first film in the franchise, which came from off the radar to become one of the biggest stories of the Con thanks to a gaggle of shrieking fans that turned the “Twilight” panel into probably the loudest and most impassioned event in Comic-Con history. So how will fans top that now that the final films are being rolled out? Let’s just say it’s a good thing there are hundreds of superheroes around to keep things from getting too out of hand.

New Pictures of Rob at the Cosmopolis Wrap Party

Going to Comic-Con? Don't give up your 'Twilight' book for this

If you're planning to attend this year's Comic-Con event in San Diego (can you believe it's next week?) in support of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and all of the other panels of Twilight fan interest (see here), there's one station you will probably want to avoid.

According to ComicBookMovie, the author of 30 Days Of Night, Steve Niles, is offering Twilight fans the "opportunity" to trade in their copies of Twilight by Stephenie Meyer in exchange for a volume of his book. Apparently, the animus for this promotion is that he finds the Twilight Saga's take on vampire lore to be astray from his own, and he hopes to put the "real" vampires, like those he's written about, back into business.

"Real horror fans have watched vampires systematically turned into wimpy fodder for years now. It's time to fight back. I'm happy to be working with IDW on the 'Sparkles for Blood' event. Hopefully, working together we can put an end to this nightmare."

‘New Moon’ Loses Box Office Record to ‘Harry Potter’

Yesterday when The Twilight Saga:Eclipse lost it’s midnight screenings record to Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2, it looked like The Twilight Saga: New Moon was going to lose it’s record as well. Today, the numbers are in, and New Moon’s one day box office record of $72.7 million was totally obliterated by Harry Potter’s $92.1 million. It looks like The Dark Knight better be ready to lose to Harry Potter as well!

Kristen Stewart Mocked in New Skit (Video)

Kristen Stewart is being mocked in a new YouTube video that pretty much takes the cake for this year's celebrity disses. From her tripping over her own two feet to her babbling at award's shows, KStew is not cut much slack. Now, there is a new video on the internet called Kristen Stewart Teaches You How To Speak More Good and it's getting a ton of attention on YouTube! It involves an actress who is a dead ringer for KStew and it's extremely funny. Even if you like KStew, this video is worth the watch.

You have to have a good sense of humor about this stuff even though it borders on mean. KStew is known for being awkward, that's just how she is. Some people think it's cool - and it is, sort of, because it's her "thing," but it's really funny when it's exaggerated!

Summit Executives, Melissa Rosenberg, and Chris Weitz Give Credit To Harry Potter Films

Erik Feig(a Summit Executive), Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight Saga screenwriter) and Chris Weitz (the director of The Golden Compass, New Moon and A Better Life) have cited the Harry Potter films as industry inspirations and changers. In the above photo, taken at the A Better Life premiere, Erik Feig is standing to Chris Weitz’s immediate left:

Erik Feig:

‘”There was a sea change with Harry Potter,” says Erik Feig, president of worldwide production at Summit Entertainment, which has made the Twilight movies. “The story has a younger protagonist, but the book series and the movies are greatly enjoyed by older people, too. I devoured the first book and gave it to every grown-up I knew. We saw the same thing with Twilight. We did not ghetto-ize it as a young-adult movie. Nor did they with Harry Potter. They drew all audiences. It was an inspiration to us.”

'Abduction' director John Singleton praises Taylor Lautner

This morning, MTV has released a new interview (video attached) with Abduction director John Singleton in which he speaks out about what fans should expect to see from Taylor Lautner in the film as well as his experience working with Lautner.

"Taylor’s the most famous actor I’ve ever worked with in my whole career. When we were shooting this movie, we had at least five to six hundred girls and their mothers like off the set, trying to get on the set, trying to be around and everything . . . it was really funny because after we worked all these hours, he’d go out and graciously shake these people’s hands and sign autographs . . . he’s a trooper."
