Kristen Stewart’s “Snow White” will open months earlier

With two “Snow White” pictures coming down the pipeline, positioning is key. This morning, one production made a move that the studio hopes will help it race to the front of the pack.

Universal shifted the release date of its “Snow White and the Huntsman” to June 1, 2012, giving it a multi-week head start over Relativity Media’s Snow White film, THR reports. Universal’s feature, which has Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth in the title roles, originally was set to open in December.

The studio told the trade that “adjustments to the production timeline” had facilitated the move.

“As Rupert and Joe were finalizing casting and preproduction of Snow White and the Huntsman, we realized that the ambitious and fully-formed world they had promised was blowing away all expectations,” said Universal Chairman Adam Fogelson and Co-Chairman Donna Langley in the announcement. “We’re thrilled that Universal will be bringing this singular version of a timeless story almost seven months earlier than anticipated.”

You know who’s not thrilled? Relativity. We’ll see if they sit still, or if they hurry their production to maybe leapfrog ahead of this “Snow White” in time.
