Water For Elephants Passes Box Office Estimates!

Kenneth Branagh’s Thor, starring Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, and Tom Hiddleston, grossed $65.72m over Mother’s Day weekend (May 6-8), according to actuals found at Box Office Mojo.

Whereas Thor earned a couple of hundred thousand dollars less than estimated, several movies on the top-twelve chart surpassed studio estimates, most notably Angela Bassett-Paula Patton’s Jumping the Broom, which collected about $1.2m more than predicted; Kate Hudson-Ginnifer Goodwin’s Something Borrowed, +$800k; Robert Pattinson-Reese Witherspoon-Christoph Waltz’s Water for Elephants, +$400k; and Carlos Saldanha’s Rio, Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family, and AnnaSophia Robb’s Soul Surfer, +$200k.

Water for Elephants and Soul Surfer were the only two movies on the top-twelve chart to post weekend-to-weekend drop-off rates below -40%.
