Robert Pattinson talks beef jerky, alligators, karaoke on 'Tonight Show'

Robert Pattinson talks beef jerky, alligators, karaoke on 'Tonight Show' -- Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Friday night, British actor Robert Pattinson talked about driving a Camry, eating beef jerky, and keeping an alligator on his shoulders. It's all in the day of the life of this actor who is currently starring in one of the most financially successful book-to-film franchises in Hollywood. Robert Pattinson, however, also stars in another upcoming adaptation -- Water for Elephants, based on the novel by Sara Gruen.

Unfortunately, the actor never got to talk about Water for Elephants. Host Jay Leno asked him about updates from his last visit on The Tonight Show, about his cover for Vanity Fair, and about his recent road trip.

Asked about his broken-down car that he talked about before, Mr. Pattinson said that he thinks it's abandoned in a garage somewhere, and now he drives rentals.

He said he drives a Corolla when he's feeling "economical," and a Camry when he's feeling "sporty." Jay Leno, who collects cars, made fun of the actor's choice in sports cars. Mr. Leno showed a photograph of Robert Pattinson from Vanity Fair where he sits in a car, and he asked about what kind of car it was. The actor said he thought it was a vintage Oldsmobile and was told by its driver that it didn't drive very well.

Mr. Leno also showed the Vanity Fair cover where Robert Pattinson is holding an alligator around his shoulders and wearing a black hat. He wanted to know why he is doing that when his new movie is called Water for Elephants. Mr. Pattinson didn't seem to know but explained that the photo was taken in about five minutes' time and joked about the hat giving him an "Amish" look.

Asked about his recent road trip, Robert Pattinson said he drove from Los Angeles to New Orleans, taking lots of backroads. He said that Native American country in New Mexico makes you feel like you have left the United States. He also talked about eating lots of beef jerky in Texas and singing karaoke in Lubbock.

Water for Elephants opens on April 22, 2011.
